- How good is your French?
- Well, I'm not sure ...

The only people who can answer the above question with any degree of certainty are those who speak the language well and have no doubts about their ability, or absolute beginners. The overwhelming majority of language students are somewhere in the middle! The middle is a vast area, it goes from those who know the language quite well but lack confidence, to those who feel they are competent after just a few lessons, to those who have studied the language but are hard put to evaluate their language level.

Students who know some French and wish to improve or refresh their language skills fall into the three following categories.

Which type are you?

  • French for tourists

Let's start with those who know little of the language but want to travel around French: in this case a short course is a much better option than constantly fiddling with a phrase book. Then there are those who have already visited a French-speaking country, have picked up few words while dealing with locals and perhaps feel the need to go beyond basics. A phrase like 'un croissant!’' may be a little short on niceties but it is a tolerable starting point: it gets the message across! However, taking a French test and attending a course to acquire a wider and less abrupt vocabulary is a much better way to enhance communication!

  • False beginners

Lower level language lessons are full of false beginners, those who started studying but stopped early on in the course, or who completed just one short course and did not continue. Reasons for this are varied, often outside events dictate having to leave a course, but it often happens that students stop because the learning program goes far beyond 'un croissant!’', requiring more time and application than they are ready to dedicate to it. These start-and-stop students do well to start again at the beginning, reviewing/remembering what they learnt before, then naturally continuing with new words and structures. This restart option also applies to those who learnt French at school but, as time passed, do not remember much. Students with a lack of confidence in their language skills often start again from scratch, as do those who do not have good memories for rules and vocabulary; a little repetition is a grand memory aid. On the other side, a French test could help them to gain confidence and not spend the money twice!

  • 'Stuck' students

Many students get to a good point in their language study and then get stuck. It seems that they no longer make any progress as grammar gets more complex and words get more precise. It is a critical moment that a bit of dogged determination and study can resolve. Once past this point things begin to fall into place. Another type of 'stuck' students are those who have studied for years and read and write well enough but cannot speak. The stumbling block of speaking in front of other students creates difficulty. Here again, insistence and practice can help get past this sticky point.

Self evaluation of your French knowledge

Of course, you can self-evaluate your language skills. With the help of the table below, defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), you can see at what level your French knowledge is initially. However, considering that a self evaluation is subjective and thus not as reliable as an evaluation made by a qualified teacher, most students underestimate their knowledge and continue learning at a lower level, which leads to an underchallenge and stagnation of their learning progress.

The Common European Framework divides learners into three broad categories which can be divided into six levels:

Basic speaker A1

  • understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases.
  • introduce himself/herself and others and can ask and answer question about personal details.
  • interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly.

Basic speaker A2

  • understand sentences and common used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance.
  • communicate in simple and routine tasks.
  • describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

Independent speaker B1

  • understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters (work, school, hobbies, etc.)
  • create simple connected text on familiar topics and topics of personal interest.
  • describe experiences and briefly give arguments and explanations for opinions.

Independent speaker B2

  • understand the main points of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics.
  • communicate in a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.
  • create clear and detailed text and explain opinion on a topical issue giving arguments of various options.

Proficient speaker C1

  • understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning.
  • express himself/herself fluently without much obvious searching for expressions.
  • create clear, detailed and well-structured text on complex topics, showing controlled use of structural patterns and cohesive devices.

Proficient speaker C2

  • understand easily quite everything heard and read.
  • express himself/herself fluently, spontaneously and precisely.
  • distinguish finer shades of meaning, even in most complex situation.
